This past weekend featured a double header with racing both Friday and Saturday night in Calgary AB.   This weekend featured more traditional layout and soil than the first round so for the first time this year we would see what all the preparation would bring for the racers.

Marco Cannella was feeling confident and ready and showed that his training during the week was paying off as he looked smooth and confident in the tight confines from the moment he hit the track.   Posting the 3rd fastest qualifying time and showing that his podium speed from round #1 was no fluke.

After some traditional indoor bar banging and paint trading in the first heat with the likes of Shawn Maffenbeier and Brad Nauditt, Marco would have to settle for a hard earned 3rd place finish behind the two veterans.   The main event saw a mid pack start and as the race unfolded Marco was in a freight train for the final podium spot.  Unfortunately, while trying to make a move in the whoops the rookie stalled the bike and the mistake would cost him dearly as he dropped to 9th for the evening.

Saturday night would be redemption for the youngster as he had taken his lessons from night 1 and during practice and qualifying looked faster and more aggressive.  Again setting 3rd fastest time heading into the show he was ready for his first Pro podium of his career.   The heat race went smoother tonight and he managed to hold off a battle to finish 2nd and earn his place in the “extra” main called the Clash for cash featuring the top 2 in both 250 and 450 heat races.  While running 4th in the clash as Marco puts it he had a little trip to “endo-nisia” putting him onto the ground with a thud.   Wisely coming back into the pits giving Andy time to straighten the bike as time is limited before the 250 main where the points matter.

Saturday night will be a check box on Marco’s list of accomplishments as a great race that was completely mistake free saw him battle Brad Nauditt the entire main for 2nd place.   Not being able to make the pass but maturely settling for 3rd, saw Marco make his first trip to the podium and first ever cracking the top on a bottle of champagne.   Leaving the west in 4th overall in points and just 1-point shy of 3rd is a great position as the series heads for Ontario for the next 3 rounds.    Next stop is Sarnia ON April 7th where we look to continue to climb the points ladder and finish this series out on the box!
