The deep rainforests of Vancouver Island waged a war of exhaustion on the racers that showed up to battle it out at The Hells Kitchen Hare Scramble.
The temperatures soared above 28 degrees as riders fought their way up steep and gnarly hills laced with root step-ups that would case you out if you’re too tired to pin it. Between the ancient forest and the finish line were never-ending brake bumps and sidehills that would end your day quickly if you made one wrong move.
The tight lines and steep ascents would work to keep racers alert enough to fend off fatigue, keeping the adrenaline high as they plunged through creeks too muddy to know the depth. Plenty of racers succumbed to Hells Kitchen and left defeated by its punishing beauty. It’s not a race for everyone.
But those who fought the trail and stayed consistent left their mark on the mountain and earned a spot on the podium. That glory is only fleeting though. It soon will fade with the storms of winter, leaving the racers with no choice but to return again to take that ride of redemption through Hells Kitchen.
