Let the Games begin…

This past weekend saw the opening round of the Rockstar Energy Triple Crown Series take place in Abbotsford, BC for the first stop of the AX portion. With a Canadian winter in full effect across the country this year, a very wet
winter made for a very challenging first round of indoor racing. With the arenas dirt being stored outside, the
track crew was left doing the best they could to dry the dirt with the use of fans, heat and calcium/lime. They worked diligently on making the most but it was an indoor race like no one had anticipated.

With the soft conditions it made it into a full mud race minus the water. Gruelling conditions but the same for everybody as teams battled the unexpected surface. We had one more unexpected twist just before the event as our rider scheduled to attend Jess Pettis was diagnosed with a broken scapula just the week before race 1. It had been mis diagnosed the week prior during the two-warm up SX races that Jess participated in down south. We called upon the rookie Marco Cannella who had been set to begin his Canadian racing with the team when the series ventured outside for the MX portion of the tour. Marco responded with positivity and an eagerness to go racing. The week leading to the race posted many challenges to get the bike and equipment swapped over and ready for Marco. Many thanks for the quick turn around from such companies as FXR and 6D to make the transition between riders look seamless from a fans perspective.Modifications to the schedule to accommodate the extra track work and prep had to be made such as the press
ride on Friday and the cancellation of the Clash for Cash on Saturday night. Marco came out swinging in the first
heat showing the field that he was here and ready to compete with a heat race win! In the main event Marco
powered to a great start almost grabbing the holeshot. During the opening laps he showed great poise and
composure running a strong 2nd. Around mid way through the main he made his one crucial mistake of the
night while trying to swipe the mud from his Rockstar adorned helmet. With only one hand on the bars the
front end tucked around the sweeper and down he went.

He struggled to pry the bike from the heavy slop that it had become part of. Once remounted and back under way
he proceeded to repass a few riders and ended the night with a very credible 5th place.
The MX101 FXR Yamaha team is ready to continue on with the positive progress and looks for a more familiar
surface for indoor racing at round 2 and 3 in Calgary March 16/17th.
