Team Monster Energy/Alpinestars/Piller’s/Kawasaki got off to an excellent start at the MRC Triple Crown Series launch in Abbotsford, BC, this past Saturday, where Round 1 of the AX Tour was held. Both Tyler Medaglia and Shawn Maffenbeier rose to the occasion to claim a podium finish in their respective classes. Medaglia took his 2018
Kawasaki KX450F to a third-place finish in the 450 Pro division while Maffenbeier piloted his 2018 Kawasaki KX250F to a second-place finish in 250 Pro
.
Although the organization of Round 1 at the Abbotsford Centre was
commendable, with a sizeable crowd on hand to watch the event, the riders were greeted with a muddy track, unusual for an indoor event, to say the least. Unfortunately, the track builders weren’t able to haul the
soil – which had gotten wet due to rain and snow – into the arena until Friday morning. For Medaglia and Maffenbeier, however, it was business as usual. Neither rider let the mud get in their way of scoring valuable points towards the Triple Crown title hunt. Medaglia grabbed a second-place in his heat race and looked good for a second-place finish behind leader, and eventual winner, Colton Facciotti. With the muddy conditions, however, which produced quite a few DNFs all night, Medaglia had to contend with a clogged radiator and opted to go into safe mode.
For Cole Thompson, it proved to be an opportune time to stick a pass on Medaglia, who still managed to salvage third place. Maffenbeier, meanwhile, was unbeatable in his heat race. In the final, he delivered a second-place finish behind Washington’s Carson Brown. “It was an awesome night for us to hit the podium in both classes. It was a good deal. A promising way to start the season. Racing conditions were not exactly optimal, but it wasn’t optimal for anyone. In all fairness to the track people, they did a pretty decent job to make it raceable,” team manager Adam “Stu” Robinson said.
